SMS Contest Scam!

I received a SMS this afternoon saying that I won RM14000 in a lucky draw. But luckily, I had been listening to radio during my holiday, so I know about this SMS scam! Not sure where they get my number, but the content of the SMS is like this:

Pengumuman dari PETRONAS MAS, TAHNIAH! SimCard Anda betua memenangi undia hadiah Wang tunai RM 14.000 Sila hubungi telefon. 0062858802027** Terima kasih

Actually, it is quite easy to identify that this SMS is a fake. There are few spelling mistakes and grammar error, which usually won’t happen in contest organize by a large company such as Petronas. You can check out the warning that send out by Petronas below.

    Hi All…

I am from Singapore… wOW… amazing that it has actually been going on since 2007… and nothing is done about ittt???

Anyway I also received an sms saying:

    Congratulation.. then written in malay…
SimCard anda memenangi hadiah $20,000 from PT.Coc@ Col@.
Sila call office: +6282187320202. Terima Kasih…

    Penghantar: Coca Cola

I called up Starhub to find out where is it from.. And was told that
it’s a scam and they’ve received complaints about such sms…
So I was told to ignore it…

But out of curiousity, I just wannted find out where is it from…
So I made a call to the number using my friend’s prepaid phone (which is safer)
It is from Indonesia… First asked if I can speak malay…
And said that it was a lucky draw for Singapore, Indonesia,
Thailand and etc… (so obviously we are the current target)
they can arrange my prize via post or bank account transfer immediately…

They asked me to sms my address to the number and call them again
when I’ve send them the sms…

Its pretty weird that they just cant do it over the phone need me
to sms again so that perhaps they can get my number again…??

    So conclusion, it’s a SPAM… =)

    Be Safe everyone…

  7. Tai Li says:

@syidah: Its never too late. Just stop your mum from communicating with them and educate your family about spams, never to give out personal information to strangers which you’re unsure of.

    Good luck.
